- A DMG file is essentially Apple's format for mountable disk images in Mac OS X (macOS) computers. When opened, it mounts a virtual disk on the computer, and is normally used for installing new applications. DMG file is usually encrypted and compressed, unlike ISO, which is an uncompressed disk image format.
- DMG files are very common on the MacOS X platform, used for Disk Images. With Disk Images we mean a full “copy” image of for example a CD, DVD or Harddisk. DMG ‘s are typically used to distribute applications.
- Try this, select your.dmg file and open with Disk utility 02. Select your Mac os X image from left panel box and then choose restore 03. Drag and drop the Mac os image to source.
- Download The Archive Browser if you don’t already have it (it’s free!) and use it to open “/Volumes/Install OS X/InstallMacOSX.pkg”. It will look like this: Click on the triangle to the left of “InstallMaxOSX.pkg” to reveal its contents, and select the “InstallESD.dmg” file from it.
Installing OS X from a DMG file can be difficult. With leopard testing and development, many people are having troubles installing from the supplied binary. Here is how it can be accomplished.
A.DMG file is a container file commonly used to distribute applications for Mac OS X. Installing software from one of these requires you to mount the image and move its contents to your computer’s “Applications” directory.
Installing OS X from a dmg file format instead of a DVD/CD format seems challenging. Here is how it can be accomplished.
1. Burn it to Dual Layer DVD
OS X is too large to fit on a single layer DVD; however, many macbooks support burning dual layer DVDs. The media is expensive, but for many people this is the easiest option.
Burn it and reboot to it. The OS X will install.

2. Restore the dmg file to an external device
An external hard drive or an iPod in hard disk mode will serve as an excellent booting device as well.
– Copy your dmg file to your current apple desktop.
– In the Utilities Folder in your Applications Folder select Disk Utility
– Select your external device in the left column of the utility
– Click the Restore button
– Drag your dmg to your Source textbox
– Drag your device from the left column to the Destination textbox
– Click the Restore
You will lose any information you have in your external device in this process. After the dmg is restored to the external device, change your boot disk to this device and reboot.
Dragging the source and destination files can be a little confusing. Click the picture below for a larger version.

To get the latest features and maintain the security, stability, compatibility, and performance of your Mac, it's important to keep your software up to date. Apple recommends that you always use the latest macOS that is compatible with your Mac.
Learn how to upgrade to macOS Big Sur, the latest version of macOS.
Check compatibility
If a macOS installer can't be used on your Mac, the installer will let you know. For example, it might say that your Mac doesn't have enough free storage space for the installation, or that the installer is too old to be opened on this version of macOS.
If you want to check compatibility before downloading the installer, learn about the minimum requirements for macOS Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, or Yosemite. You can also check compatible operating systems on the product-ID page for MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, or Mac Pro.
Make a backup
Before installing, it’s a good idea to back up your Mac. Time Machine makes it simple, and other backup methods are also available. Learn how to back up your Mac.
Download macOS
It takes time to download and install macOS, so make sure that you're plugged into AC power and have a reliable internet connection.
These installers from the App Store open automatically after you download them:
- macOS Catalina 10.15 can upgrade Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks
- macOS Mojave 10.14 can upgrade High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion
- macOS High Sierra 10.13 can upgrade Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion
Your web browser downloads the following older installers as a disk image named InstallOS.dmg or InstallMacOSX.dmg. Open the disk image, then open the .pkg installer inside the disk image. It installs an app named Install [Version Name]. Open that app from your Applications folder to begin installing the operating system.
- macOS Sierra 10.12 can upgrade El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion
- OS X El Capitan 10.11 can upgrade Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard
