Hillsborough County, Fla. (May 15, 2019) - The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners recognized three outstanding student-athletes with the Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award and two Honorable Mentions during today's Board of County Commissioners meeting.
The Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award honors a high school baseball player or team in Hillsborough County who displays outstanding athletic, scholastic, and community achievements.
The 2019 Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award winner is Christian Suarez, a pitcher from Leto High School. A senior, Suarez is 19-3, with over 150 strikeouts, the last two seasons combined. This year, he has 8 wins and just 3 losses, with 80 strikeouts in 62.1 innings, and an earned run average of 1.24. Suarez has been named an All-Western Conference pitcher and All 813-Preps County Pitcher. Suarez has a 6.67 grade-point average, and has earned an associate's degree from Hillsborough Community College through his participation in Leto's Collegiate Academy. Suarez, who has performed well over 100 community service hours in multiple areas, will continue his education and baseball career at Stetson University in Deland.
Cade Shissler, an infielder from Plant City High School, and Brennan Hyde, also an infielder, from Chamberlain High School, received Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award Honorable Mentions. Shissler, a senior who was awarded a baseball scholarship by Stetson University, is hitting .326, with 28 hits, 4 home runs, 12 runs batted in, 25 runs scored, and an on-base percentage of .427. He has a GPA of 6.19, and will graduate with honors. He and Suarez plan to be roommates at Stetson. Hyde, a junior infielder, is a defensive standout who hit .390 in the fall. He missed most of the season after having Tommy John surgery, but remained a leader of the team, and returned to action late in the season, hitting well over .400. Hyde's GPA of 5.01 is the highest in the Chamberlain baseball program in 10 years.
About the Wade Boggs Athletic Achievement Award
The Board of County Commissioners established the award in 2005 in honor of first-ballot National Baseball Hall of Fame member Wade Boggs. A resident of the Tampa Bay area since he was a boy, Boggs is a 12-time All Star who ended his 18-year Major League Baseball career as a member of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, who retired his number 12 in 2000. His career statistics include 3,010 hits, 1,513 runs, 578 doubles, 61 triples, 118 home runs, 1,014 runs batted in, and a batting average of .328. He reached base safely in 80 percent of his 2,432 career games. The Boston Red Sox honored Boggs on May 26, 2016, when they retired his number 26 in a ceremony at Fenway Park in Boston.
